Educators are responsible or not for today’s situation in engineering colleges?
Since 2016, the number of engineering
seats has been on the decline. According to AICTE, it is around 75,000
annually. In 2016-17, total intake capacity at undergraduate level was
15,71,220, of which total enrolment was 7,87,127, which is just around 50.1 per
cent. In 2015-16, total intake was 16,47,155, of which enrolment was 8,60,357,
which was 52.2 per cent. AICTE wants to close down about 800 engineering
colleges across India. There are no takers for their seats, and admissions are
plunging in these colleges every year.
Faculty is one of the stakeholders in
education system. Please give your opinion whether faculty is responsible for less
admission, decrease in intake and subsequent closure of engineering colleges. Also
give opinion on others reply.
Yeah ..educators is one of the reason of closure of college.. Because the faculty is the source of positive as well as negative thoughts for student. It depends on faculty whether they are providing quality education to the students or not..On that basis students gets positive or negative outcomes..so I think for some extent educators are also responsible.

ReplyDeleteYes, educators play an important role in today's scenario of Engineering Colleges, although there are other factors also involved. Majority of the companies have to invest their resources, in terms of time and money, on these fresh graduates to train them as per their needs. I believe that if we make the curriculum and deliver lectures and content in a manner that will make them industry ready, we can make a difference.
ReplyDeleteTo become a good teacher, I believe that teacher should have any one of the following: 1. Communication Skills 2. Empathy 3. Technical Knowledge. Category A: Person with all these qualities is probably the excellent teacher. Category B; Person with any one of these qualities is going to survive in teaching. Caegory C: However a person who do not have any of these should be considered as 'Not Fit for Teaching' the same way we call student 'Not Fit for Technical Education' if he/she fails to get degree in many years. Those without any of these qualities are majorly responsible for todays decline in quality of education and shutting down of colleges. More the number of these kind of teachers (Category C) in a department more are the chances of shutting down/decreasing intake.
ReplyDeleteIts true that today lots of Engineering colleges are closing these days. But I don't think that faculties are only responsible for the same. The other points are also to be considered like for example if institute itself wants to close the branch or else they want to reduce intake then even though faculty has all the the skills as mentioned by you how faculty only be responsible?, so I think along with this other causes also has to be considered.
ReplyDeleteVery true madam. Other factors like management, industry behavior and regulating bodies openness to some courses etc are also responsible. But faculty is one of the major stakeholder. Teachers have not upgraded themselves for many years and now the effect has been felt after so many years. No management opens college for closing down. To put it in simple words no shop keeper opens shop to close down. If employees are not working efficiently or are not showing empathy towards customers then eventually that shop will close down. In a pool of employees if one or two are working hard then that does not serve the purpose. It is team work and everyone should work to create the brand name. Every single employee/teacher matters. I would also like to put it in other way. Basket full of good onions may be spoiled even if there is one spoiled onion. Remedy is to remove the spoiled onion so that good ones are not affected. Think again !!!!!! I am not saying ONLY faculty is responsible; but faculty members all together are responsible (being a major driving force in running department/institute).
DeleteEducators are partly responsible for reduction in interest of students to enroll in engineering colleges. There is need to change attitude of teachers as teaching is not just a regular job where number of hours of working are important. Teachers carry much larger moral, social responsibility. On the other hand opening of Institutes for political gain should be stopped in the first place. Colleges should have good vision and motivation from the beginning. ...Anushri Joshi
ReplyDeleteSurely, educators are one of the major pillars of the education system, and should take the responsibility to educate the students according to the current requirements of the industries. Educator can act as a medium to bridge out the gap between what is delivered to students and what is actually required by industry. Educator should accept the challenge of fulfilling the industry’s ever-changing requirements. However some support mechanism, such as industry training is essential for educators.
ReplyDeleteMy observations are as follow
ReplyDelete1. I agree with the statement to some extent, but faculty could not be blame alone for degradation in quality of engineering education.
2. I believe that every faculty members has to contribute/judge based on four areas : 1 Research 2. Teaching 3. Administrative 4 Community Service , as per their post and experience. Also while selecting/recruiting faculty members management/authority shall make check of all these four areas so institute may get a best faculty member for the job.
3. In majority of the institutes a proper Eco-system of nurturing faculty members is missing which may lead to poor faculty performance and hence quality of education.

Rightly said sir. I wish that that other participants also give such critical comments.
DeleteYes , Educators are responsible, since it is one of the major stakeholder. Faculty has to evolve as per the need of time. With the changing needs, teacher has to support students for shaping their future
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion teacher is not responsible. Environment is responsible. Mode of acceptance have been changed by students. So teachers need to change the mode of delivery.
ReplyDeleteI agree that educators are responsible for the current situation of engineering colleges to some extent but they aren't the only factor.
ReplyDeleteEducators: Incompetent educators often follow a rigid orthodox teaching method which does not engage today's open-minded and curious students.
Parents: Many a times parents enforce their children to undertake engineering leading to their failure which is often blamed on the institute and the educators.
Not only educators but two major factors are responsible for this .
ReplyDeleteOne ease of approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to set up engineering colleges has led to maximum no. of institutes, many of which do not have the right faculty or the curriculum to train students.
Second, the courses being taught are having gap with the industry’s requirements, both in product manufacturing and services sectors.
though now the gap is identified and been trying to solve.
